Love and Other Disasters

Starring: Brittany Murphy

Rating: 3.5

"Love and Other Disasters" was one of those movies that I liked more the more I watched it. At first I honestly didn't know if I would be able to get through the whole movie as the main character has a habit that I found very annoying. But as the movie went on, that habit either annoyed me less, or it wasn't as prevalent in the movie.

A movie about four Londoners trying to succeed in both life and love, "Love and Other Disasters" seems like it could be almost any other movie. However, they do take some fun artistic licenses that make the movie surprisingly unique.

I liked "Love and Other Disasters". As I said, I liked it more and more as the movie went on. There are, of course, predictable moments. There are also moments where you'll think 'oh come on. Who does that?' But, it was still a fun movie. I would watch it again.

Definitely, Maybe

Rating: 3.5

"Definitely, Maybe" is about a man who tries to tell his daughter about his dating life before he married her mother. She then guesses who the women are, and which is her mom.

"Definitely, Maybe" is a cute story, and they way it's told makes it even more fun. The actors do a great job of being believable.

Overall, it was a fun movie, and I'm glad that I saw it. "Definitely, Maybe" definitely won't go on my favorite movies of all times list. I recommend you see it. "Definitely, Maybe" is a great movie for a light evening.

Northanger Abbey movie review

Northanger Abbey
Northanger Abbey

Masterpiece Theatre 2008 production

Starring: JJ Field and Felicity Jones

Rating: 3

"Northanger Abbey" was the first novel that Jane Austen wrote. However, it was the last novel of hers to be published.

I am happy to see that Masterpiece Theater and the BBC remade "Northanger Abbey". The movie is short, but it does follow the book rather well. I especially like the sequences of Catherine Morland's imagination that are woven throughout the movie.

All the actors played their parts well, and overall I am quite pleased with how this version of "Northanger Abbey" turned out. I definitely recommend that you see "Northanger Abbey". While it is probably the least known of all the Jane Austen novels, it is still a must- see / read. "Northanger Abbey" tells us quite a bit about Jane Austen at the time she was writing the story "Northanger Abbey".

Definitely see "Northanger Abbey", especially if you are a Jane Austen fan. You'll enjoy it.

Michael Clayton

Starring: George Clooney

Rating: 4.5

"Michael Clayton" is about an attorney, known as the Fixer in his law firm, who comes across the biggest case of his career that could produce disastrous results for those involved.

"Michael Clayton" certainly has a way of pulling you into the story. The movie kept me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. "Michael Clayton" leaves you guessing and in suspense the whole time.

I really liked "Michael Clayton". I thought it was a very well done movie. It has an amazing cast. "Michael Clayton" stars George Clooney, Sydney Pollack (in one of his last films), Tom Wilkinson, and Tilda Sinton, all of whom put in wonderful performances.

Definitely watch "Michael Clayton" if you're in the mood for a movie that will keep you interested and continually guessing.

Lust, Caution movie review

Lust Caution
Lust, Caution

Directed by: Ang Lee

Rating: 2.5

"Lust, Caution" is an espionage thriller set in WWII-era Shanghai, in which a young woman, Wang Jiazhi, gets swept up in a dangerous game of emotional intrigue with a powerful political figure, Mr. Yee.

"Lust, Caution" is a foreign film, so bear in mind that it has different "rules" than American films. There are some very graphic and disturbing scenes of a sexual nature that made it difficult to watch at times. So, I didn't really care for that.

"Lust, Caution" offered a view of life in WWII Shanghai that was unknown to me before. So, I do feel as if I learned something while watching "Lust, Caution". However, I do not know how accurate this portrayal is.

I didn't know much about "Lust, Caution" before watching it. I knew that it was directed by Ang Lee, and that captured my interest. While I enjoyed "Lust, Caution", I don't believe that I would watch it again. And I can't whole-heartedly recommend it to everyone because of the graphic nature of it.

Sense and Sensibility
Sense and Sensibility

Starring: Hattie Morahan and Charity Wakefield

Rating: 5

This version of "Sense and Sensibility" is the 2008 BBC edition. Of all of Jane Austen's books, "Sense and Sensibility" is my favorite. I also really like the 1995 "Sense and Sensibility" starring Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson. So, I was a little bit unsure of how I felt about this 'new' "Sense and Sensibility". But I loved it.

I loved how it followed the book more closely. And the characters all did an amazing job. As did Andrew Davis who wrote the screenplay.

I highly recommend that you see "Sense and Sensibility". It is a fantastic book as well as movie. It may be a little bit long, it's 3 hours, but it is absolutely worth it. Check out "Sense and Sensibility" as soon as you can.

Made of Honor movie review

made-honor.jpgMade of Honor

Starring: Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan

Rating: 2.5

"Made of Honor" is an interesting "remake" of My Best Friend's Wedding. It's not really an official remake, but it's how it turned out.

"Made of Honor" is about Tom, who after his best friend, Hannah, leaves for Scotland for six weeks, he realizes that he's in love with her. However, while in Scotland, Hannah falls in love with Colin, and they become engaged.

When Tom finds out (and is asked to be Hannah's maid of honor), he is determined to do everything he can to stop the wedding and make Hannah fall in love with him instead.

"Made of Honor" is cute. I especially like Michelle Monaghan's performance. And Kevin McKidd (as Colin) is pretty funny. The thing about "Made of Honor" though is that it is entirely predictable. You know when the movie starts how it's going to end.

I recommend that if you like the romantic comedy movies that you see "Made of Honor". But if you don't, then you won't like it.

Baby Mama movie review

baby-mama.jpgBaby Mama

Starring: Tina Fey

Rating: 4

"Baby Mama" was not what I was expecting. I heard that Tina Fey was starring in it, and I was expecting very much the 'Saturday Night Live' comedy. I was surprised that the comedy in "Baby Mama" was funny in a different way. It still had aspects of the SNL style, but I was pleasantly surprised.

"Baby Mama" is the story of a woman who is desperately trying to have a baby. When she can't get pregnant herself, she hires a surrogate. Just when she thinks everything is great, she finds out she was wrong.

I recommend watching "Baby Mama". It is one of the funnier movies in theaters right now. I think you'll enjoy it. Listen carefully, the words and comedy come pretty quickly.

"August Rush" is honestly one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. I highly recommend that everyone watch it as soon as they can. You'll enjoy it.

Something else that is really great about "August Rush" is that Jonathan Rhys performed all his own music. Awesome! Go Jonathan. I love it when actors actually perform the music themselves.

Good Luck Chuck movie review

Good Luck Chuck starring Dane Cook and Jessica Alba
Good Luck Chuck

Starring: Jessica Alba and Dane Cook

Rating: 1.5

While I thought the premise for "Good Luck Chuck" would be a good one, I was not expecting what I got. "Good Luck Chuck" is the story of Charlie. Charlie was cursed as a teenager so that none of his relationships would ever be 'true love'. But, he later learned that this curse also included something else...sleep with Charlie once, and the next man you date will be your true love.

At first, this discover thrills Charlie. (Here's part of why I didn't like "Good Luck Chuck.") He goes around sleeping with everyone. And the movie shows it. Very graphically. And repeatedly.

One day, Charlie discovers that he wants to fall in love. So, when he tries to get the girl to fall for him, he needs to find a way to break the curse. He'll do anything to break it. Anything.

So, if you like watching the kind of movies that make you squeamish because of all the nudity, you might like "Good Luck Chuck". And if you like movies that portray the idea that you're only beautiful if you're thin and kind of promiscuous, then you might like "Good Luck Chuck". As for myself, I don't know why I finished it.

Prince Caspian movie review

prince-caspian.jpgPrince Caspian

Starring: Ben Barnes

Rating: 4.25

I grew up reading the books about a zillion times, so it is about impossible for me to not like the movie, but in that sense it is also about impossible for me to like the movie 100%, because there are differences from the book. I normally don't mind when they leave things out because I know you can't always put in everything, but I really don't like it when they add stuff, and Prince Caspian, did have some things that weren't in the book added. However, it was to a minimal degree, so therefore, it was still pretty good. Plus, Prince Caspian is HOTTTTT so, as long as he's on screen it's a good thing ;). But all that put aside it's still a great movie, especially if you are a lover of the books, like me :) . See it.

Balls of Fury

2007

Starring: Christopher Walken

Rating: 2

Down-and-out former professional ping-pong phenom, Randy Daytona, is sucked into a maelstrom when FBI Agent Ernie Rodriguez recruits him for a secret mission. Randy is determined to bounce back and win, and to smoke out his father's killer -- arch-fiend Feng.

"Balls of Fury" reminded me a little about "Dodge Ball". The premise is there, but I think that they let the ball drop a little when it comes to the comedy. (And I tend to like silly comedy movies.) This one just didn't quite cut it for me though.

If you're looking for an evening of mindless entertainment, then this is your movie. If you want to think a little and talk the movie over when you're done watching it, then keep looking.

Ironman movie review

ironman.bmpIronman

2008

Starring: Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow

Rating: 4

"Ironman" is another of the Marvel comics to make it to the big screen. Weapons maker Tony Stark is captured and held prisoner in Afghanistan. Instead of building the missile his captors require of him, he builds himself a suit of iron that allows him to escape and to fight evil.

While "Ironman" is a bit predictable in that it is a comic book movie, so you kind of know where it's going all the way through, it is still a really great movie. It was fun to watch. It had awesome effects and was funny as well.

We definitely recommend that you watch "Ironman". It makes a great summer movie. You'll enjoy it.

What Happens in Vegas movie review

What Happens in Vegas starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher
What Happens in Vegas

2008

Starring: Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher

Rating: 2

"What Happens in Vegas" is a new romantic comedy that is a cross between the ever-popular "Pride and Prejudice" plot and "The Break Up". So, I guess "What Happens in Vegas" isn't really that new after all.

Just because it is a recycled plot line, does not mean that it isn't funny. There are definite funny parts. The challenge though, is that the entire movie is predictable. (I guess most chic flick's are.)

"What Happens in Vegas" is the story of Joy and Jack who find out that they got married while drunk in Vegas one night. The next morning, they discover that they have also won millions of dollars. The two seek a divorce and each wants the money. How does the story end? Go ahead. Guess. You're probably right.

Watch "What Happens in Vegas" when you're in the mood for an unsurprising, but somewhat funny, movie.

"Penelope" is a modern romantic tale about a young aristocratic heiress born under a curse that can only be broken when she finds true love with "one of her own kind who will love her faithfully".

"Penelope" is a fun movie that appeals to the fairy tale lovers in all of us. And it has a wonderful moral. It's fun to watch "Penelope". The characters are all believable, and they seem to grow and change (or not) as the move develops. The cast is great! Christina Ricci, as always, delivers a great performance, as do James McAvoy and Simon Woods.

"27 Dresses" tells the story of a woman, Jane, who (after serving as a bridesmaid 27 times) is maid of honor for her sister. The catch? Her sister is marrying the man that Jane is in love with.

Jane befriends a reporter, unbeknownst to her he is writer of all her favorite wedding announcements. While it may sound like a fun relationship, things take a wrong turn.

"27 Dresses" is a cute, fun, but predictable film. It's premise is one that all girls can relate to (well, for the most part), and thus the basis for its appeal. I'm happy that I watched "27 Dresses", but I probably won't watch it again. But, I do recommend you watch it. It made for a fun evening. It's especially good if you can get a few friends together to watch it.

Movie MeMe

The new fad.

quoting your favorite movies and letting people guess what they are. Here are mine. I'll post the answers in a few days if no one guesses. Remember, no googling the quote -- that's cheating!

1. [Woman 1]: To love is to burn - to be on fire, like Juliet or Guinevere or Eloise...
[Woman 2]: They made rather pathetic ends, dear.
[Woman 1]: Pathetic? To die for love? How can you say so? What could be more glorious?
[Woman 2]: I think that would be taking your romantic sensibilities a little far.

2. I love my dad. But technically, since he's my stepfather he's not family... he's more like a hostage.

3. [Man]: What was that for?
[woman]: Because you have always been so kind to me, and I won't be seeing you again since I'm killing myself once we reach the honeymoon suite.
[man]: Won't that be nice. She kissed me.

4. Careful the things you say, children will listen. Careful the things you do, children will see. And learn. Children may not obey, but children will listen. Children will look to you for which way to turn, to learn what to be. Careful before you say, "Listen to me." Children will listen. Careful the wish you make, wishes are children. Careful the path they take - wishes come true, not free. Careful the spell you cast, not just on children. Sometimes the spell may last beyond what you can see and turn against you. Careful the tale you tell. That is the spell. Children will listen.

5. You have come here, in pursuit of your deepest urge. In pursuit of that wish which till now has been silent... SILENT! I have brought you that our passions may fuse and merge. In your mind you've already succumbed to me. Dropped all defenses, completely succumbed to me. Now you are here with me. No second thoughts. You've decided... DECIDED! No backward glances, our games of make-believe are at an end! Past all thought of if or when. No use resisting, abandon thought and let the dream descend! What raging fire shall flood the soul? What rich desires unlock its door? What sweet seductions lie before us? The final threshold... what warm unspoken secrets will we learn?

6. My sister Veronica and I had this double act, and my husband Charlie traveled around with us. Now for the last number in our act we did these 20 acrobatic tricks in a row: one, two, three, four, five, splits, spread-eagles, back-flips, flip-flops, one right after the other. So this one night before the show we're at the hotel Cicero, the three of us boozin', having a few laughs, and we run out of ice, so I run out to get some. I come back, open the door, and there's Veronica and Charlie doing number 17, the spread-eagle. Well, I was in such a state of shock that I completely blacked out; I can't remember a thing. It wasn't until later, when I was washing the blood off my hands, I even knew they were dead.

7. The mode of your declaration merely spared me any concern I might have felt in refusing you, had you behaved in a more gentleman-like manner. You could not have made me the offer of your hand in any possible way that would have tempted me to accept it. From the very beginning your manners impressed me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit and your selfish disdain for the feelings of others. I had not known you a month before I felt you were the last man in the world whom I could ever marry!

8. [name] gehst du einkaufen? Ich brauch shampoo. (Translation: are you going shopping? I need shampoo.)

9. Do it.

10. I have another scenario for you - I'm in love with you. I apologize for the blunt delivery, but as problematic as this fact may be, I'm in love... with YOU. I'm not feeling this because you're leaving, and not because it feels good to feel this way... which, by the way, it does, or did before you went off like that. I can't figure out the mathematics of this, I just know I love you. I can't believe how many times I'm saying it! And I never thought I'd feel this way again, so that's pretty phenomenal. And I realize that I come as a package deal: 3 for the price of 1. I know my package, perhaps in the light of day, isn't all that wonderful, but I finally know what I want and that, in itself, is a miracle. And what I want is YOU.

No Country for Old Men starring Javiar Bardem

Rating: ?????

I tried watching this movie three times. I actually hardly ever fall asleep during movies I haven't seen, and I've done it twice in one month. Sad. Anyways, I fell asleep the first two times I tried to watch it. The third time I was successful in finishing it. I'm not sure what I think of it. I liked the ending, which not a lot of people did from what I'm told, but I did. Also I really liked Javiar Bardem in it, he was truly really really creepy.
