Sense and Sensibility
Directed by: Ang Lee
Starring: Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant
Review of Sense and Sensibility
This version of Jane Austen’s prized novel, Sense and Sensibility, is the
only version I’ve seen that manages to capture the essence of the entire
novel. It was both comedic and tragic. Emma Thompson both wrote and
starred in this production. And there is little doubt in anyone’s mind
that Emma Thompson (and Kenneth Branaugh) are the two best Shakespeare
actors, but now one might assume the same for Jane Austen.
All of the characters are clearly embraced by the actors in this version.
One is able to quickly identify with them all. Sense and Sensibility is a
film that is absolutely suitable for the whole family – although as with
most of Jane Austen’s classics, the men in the family may find it a bit of
a chick flick – but less than any other Jane Austen adaptation, in my
(humble) opinion at least.
