I cannot tell you how much I didn't care for "The Almost Moon" by Alice Sebold. I had been wanting to read "The Lovely Bones" by Sebold for years now, so when my book club chose "The Almost Moon" I was excited for a preview of how the author writes and produces characters.
I was highly disappointed. The main character, Helen, is flat. Nothing develops with her or about her, or around her. This is a "poor me" novel to the greatest extent. Not only does Helen not develop as a character, but none of the characters do.
If it hadn't been for my book club, I don't know that I'd have finished it. I simply couldn't stand reading it. But, I finished it so that I could discuss it with the other members of the club.
If you are unfortunate enough as to have to read this book, I'm sorry.
The first sentence is about as exciting as the book gets...and I really didn't like it.
