Prep: A Novel
Prep
By Curtis Sittenfield
Rating: 1
I was super-excited to read this novel. It was chosen as the first book of a new book club I joined (my first). I don't normally read this type of book. I love classic literature, but (aside from Harry Potter) I haven't really jumped on the popular book bandwagon. Now, after reading Prep I know why. (However, since writing this review I have read some excellent current popular books.)
Prep is Curtis Sittenfield's first novel; I applaud her for her effort, but her book is entirely lacking. I didn't buy into or relate to Lee, the main character, in any way. She is also a static character. She never developed. And maybe even worse than that, neither did any of the other characters. Not one. The plot follows a girl through her years of prep school. But it doesn't really do that. It tells of moments that happen, while most of the pages are filled with junk that doesn't matter.
Sittenfield's writing style was also annoying. She would digress to the point (or away from it I should say) where I could no longer remember what the point was in the first place. Not only could I not remember it; I stopped caring about it as well.
Needless to say, I don't recommend you read Prep, but if you really want to, who am I to stop you?
