The Second Wives Club
By: Jane Moore
2006; 352 pages
Rating: 2.5
I read The Second Wives Club because that was the only book I had available to me at the time (that I hadn't already read). At first I really disliked it. But, as it went on, I disliked it more and more. Until later... then it finally grew on me a little, but not enough to have me give it a higher rating.
I was pretty impressed with Moore's writing style. She was definitely able to give each character a unique voice, probably due to the fact that each chapter alternates being narrated in first person by one of the characters. I did like how all of the characters seemed equally developed and distinctive.
The Second Wives Club tells the stories of four women - Fiona, Alison, Julia and Susan who are each the second wife to their husband. The form a club where they can talk about any issues they may be having with their husband and or his first wife. At first, this starts out as a gripe fest where all the women complain about their life without really taking any action towards making it better. But, as the book goes on, they finally take responsibility and make a decision (and act on it) for how they can better their life.
I don't really have strong feelings one way or another about The Second Wives Club. So, if it tickles your fancy then read it. But, if you're just looking for a fun book to read, then I might check out a different book.
SPOILER ALERT
I really liked how in the end, the women who intentionally broke up the marriage of their husband with his first wife came to the realization that their marriage was not founded on all that it should and could be. Therefore, their marriages did not work out. But, the women whose husbands were already separated from their wives (whether by death or divorce prior to meeting), were able to work out their marriage and even make it stronger than it was before.
