From Here to Eternity
1953
Starring: Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Frank Sinatra, and Donna Reed
Rating: 2
It's true that there is lots of character development in From Here to Eternity. But the sad thing is that the plot is so unbearably predictable. Now to be fair, because I'm watching this movie in 2007, and I have seen innumerable films in my lifetime, it is entirely possible that the very reason From Here to Eternity seemed predictable to me was because it was the film that all the movies I saw were "borrowed" from. It's hard to tell because I can't offer an unbiased opinion. I wasn't alive when this movie was made, and there's no way I could have seen From Here to Eternity before seeing any other movies.
I did enjoy watching all the characters develop nicely. But it was also like watching a bit of a soap opera. Donna Reed's character definitely does develop, but does she develop into a better person? It was also fun for me to see all these great actors at so young an age.
I guess I recommend From Here to Eternity if you're a huge fan of old movies; don't mind predictability, and are dying to see it. But if you're just watching it for a night of good fun, I'd pick something else.
