The Mistress of Spices
2007
Starring: Aishwarya Rai and Dylan McDermot
Rating: 3.5
"The Mistress of Spices" tells the story of Tilo who learns to become a spice mistress after her parents are killed. Spice mistresses know that every person has a spice that is specific to them, and also that the right blend of spices can help with whatever a person is going through. There are three rules that every spice mistress must follow:
1. You can never use the spices for yourself
2. You can never leave the store
3. You can never touch another person's skin.
"The Mistress of Spices" reminded me a lot of "Chocolat". Probably because of the parallels between the two, it was fairly easy to see where the movie was going, and also where it would end up. However, the biggest problem that I had with "The Mistress of Spices" is that there was a scene that was not explained at all. I kept waiting for the explanation about the bird, but it never was. My friend's biggest problem was how many times the word "spices" was said. If you were looking for a good drinking game, you could make one up while watching "The Mistress of Spices". Just take a drink every time the word "spices" is mentioned. I'll be surprised if you can make it through half the movie.
