Maybe I'm not approaching this with a young enough mindset, but I thought that Inkheart dropped the ball a bit. The storyline had such promise that I kept expecting more out of it. Don't get me wrong; it's a good story. But it wasn't a great story.
The idea that by reading aloud, a book comes to life is brilliant. I just think that Cornelia Funke could have done a bit more with it. But, again, maybe I'm approaching this from an adult perspective instead of a younger perspective as it was intended.
I was never fully engrossed in the novel to the point where I felt I was actually in the story. And, I love it when a book accomplishes that feat. (And usually, it's a bit easier with a fantasy novel - since I have to feel that way to fully appreciate the book.)
I imagine that Inkheart would be better read aloud to a younger crowd. So, if you have that option, take it. The book is nice, and it has great intrigue, but I'm not racing out to read Inkspell (the sequel). I still liked it, just didn't love it.
