I've seen the movie "Little Women", and loved it. So, it's been on my TBR list for years. I honestly don't know how I made it through junior high without reading it. It's a classic (for obvious reasons), and is a really enjoyable read.
Alcott's writing is fun and lighthearted. It makes for an easy read, and one that can easily be picked up at any point in one's life. I do think that everyone should read "Little Women" as it's such a staple in American culture.
Spoiler alert...
To tell you the truth, the reason that I read "Little Women" was because I wanted more of an insight into why Jo and Laurie didn't marry. I never really understood that. I know that the reason Louisa May Alcott wrote the second volume was because her readers really wanted to read about Jo and Laurie getting married. Why didn't they? The reason Alcott mentioned didn't really make much sense to me. The whole book she writes how clearly Jo loves Laurie. Maybe it's just me, but I think Alcott made Jo refuse Laurie just to spite some of her readers. Yes, I understand that it's not possible to make yourself love someone you don't, but I also think that throughout most of the book (both volumes) Jo appears to really love Laurie. Oh well. It's not that I have anything against the professor, I just really wanted to see Jo and Laurie together.
And, I really dislike Amy. I don't think that Alcott did a great job clarifying that Amy really did become a better woman than she was a child. So maybe I'm just bitter that Laurie got stuck with Amy.
I would have loved to have learned more about Beth. It seems to me that she's not given enough / equal time in the book, and she's my favorite character.
