La Cabrera in Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina is a tiny restaurant on the corner of Cabrera and Thames. It grew to be so popular that they opened another restaurant less than a block away. At first I was a little skeptical of La Cabrera. I thought that it was only popular because it was mentioned in the Lonely Planet guide, and most other restaurants (and hotels) we've been to that were featured in the Lonely Planet, we were disappointed in. However, our neighbors recommended that we give La Cabrera a try. They also said that one steak was enough for two people.
The atmosphere at La Cabrera is a bit crowded and noisy, as is the one at La Cabrera Norte (but not as much). At La Cabrera, you can see the kitchen from your table and the space is small and cramped - but the food makes up for it. The atmosphere at La Cabrera Norte is a little bit better, it's still crowded, but it is much bigger.
After walking past La Cabrera on several occasions and seeing that it was always packed - no matter what time or day of the week, we decided to give it a try. We are so glad that we did. We're also glad that we ordered one steak for the two of us to share.
We ordered the filet. We got four. All of which were perfectly cooked and very tender. Aside from being surprised at the amount of steak we were given for our US $17, we were also given eleven small salads, sauces, and toppings. All types were represented including: pesto, roasted garlic, caramelized onion, mashed potato, applesauce, carrots, tiny baked potatoes, a green salad, and much more.
We were so full from dinner that we didn't order dessert. This time. Go to La Cabrera. In fact, make a special trip if you have to. Your taste buds and the meat lover in you will thank you.
