Something incredible happened when I went to see American Gangster last night. It became the second movie I've ever walked out of. (The first was Bad Boys II.)
I really tried to give this movie a chance, mostly because I think that Denzel Washington is a great actor. After a very violent opening scene, I was a bit leery. But, I still tried to give it a chance. During the non-violent parts, I was bored. During the violent parts I was disgusted. It was purely gratuitous violence - and even worse than that, it was nonchalant gratuitous violence. Why was I bored? Because I couldn't buy into a single character. None of the characters made me want to keep watching. I didn't care what happened to them. The last straw came a little over an hour into the movie. I know how it ended, because the friends I went to see it with stayed. I don't feel that the end has any redeeming qualities.
